JACK STAPLETON R.I.P.

Abbeyleix Golf Club lost one of it’s great members with the  sudden and unexpected passing on May 28th of Jack Stapleton. R.I.P. Jack was certainly one of the Club’s great members although he was a relatively late convert to the game of golf.  His youth was full of sport being a boxer, a noted and gifted hurler who like nothing more that a good tough game of hurling. He graced many teams both in Co. Laois and further a field and his prowess on the field earned him widespread respect as a hard but fair opponent.  Later when he finished playing he became a Referee and was noted for ensuring that fair play was maintained at all times, the mark of a true sportsman. One of Jacks proudest moments in sport was one that did not involve himself but seeing his son Anthony refereeing an All Ireland Minor final.

As previously mentioned Jack took up thee game of golf at a later stage of his life but once he joined Abbeyleix he became a committed and dedicated member who could always be counted on to support  any event  being run by the club be it a competition, a social function or indeed  voluntary work around the course. He was one of the dedicated group of members who assisted our ground staff by manning the machinery and cutting fairways, rough or greens whichever was required to ease the burden on our course staff.

Jack loved his golf and he was a man who mixed with everyone regardless of their ability on the course. Jack was always available to play with golfers of any standard even beginners and several people recalled that one of the first people to invite them to play a round with them was Jack who always encouraged them and indeed took a quiet interest in their progress. A stalwart with the Wednesday seniors he enlivened any group he went out with and will be sadly missed by that group..

Jack was a great family man and to his wife Mary and family we offer our sincere sympathies.
He left us very suddenly and he will be missed in the Club. The very large attendance of members at his funeral, both in Ballacolla and Ballinakill bear testimony to his great popularity in the Club and we pray that God will grant peace to the gentle soul of a gentleman Jack Stapleton.
